You "otter" get out to the coast

With the heat and smoke in the air it's a great time to escape to the Sonoma Coast. We were there several times this summer, so I'll write up our experiences to share with those of you who want to travel there "virtually".

When the coast was re-opened earlier this summer we braved the crowds for the first weekend and were delighted by the experience. One of our "finds" was the town of Jenner. Even though I've lived here for over 30 years I had driven by there maybe once. What a shame I hadn't been there before! Here was a bit about our experience:

First of all, there are limited options for places to eat, but we discovered the Cafe Aquatica right off Highway 1. Well worth the stop, with great coffee options, salads, and seafood options. The best part is the setting. All the seating is outdoors, and it all has a great view of the river. It's easy to be socially distanced and enjoy your meal or snack.

I had a coffee and the avocado toast, my daughter had the pesto portobello sandwich and we were both quite happy with our choices.

From Highway 1 you can see where the river meets the ocean, and often otters are basking in the sun on the beach.

Here's a close-up of the otters. They are smart to rest on the other side of the river where fewer people travel.

Later in the summer I made the trip again with my husband. We found access to the beach we had previously spotted across the way (Goat Rock Beach).

We walked along the beach and enjoyed views of spouting whales and a closer look at the otters. They're protected during pupping season, so you can't get too close.

In addition to these attractions, the crashing waves and views of the town make this a special place indeed. We'll make sure to go back soon!
