I've always wanted to try this technique and since I have an abundance of pumpkin plants this year I decided to try it out. I recruited help from my shelter-at-home kids and we had fun scratching pumpkins.
It's easy - while pumpkins are still growing, supposedly before they turn orange, you scratch them using any sharp instrument. We weren't sure what would work best so we took out an array of tools.
What seemed to work best was the ice pick or the corkscrew. We definitely learned that the deeper you carve your design, the more the pumpkin tries to heal itself.
Here are the initial results. We plan to do it again on the next batch of pumpkins I planted so stay turned!
